The South Atlantic Conference Announces Volleyball Players of the Week, Nov. 3
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate right side Shelly Stumpff was selected as the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while teammate Iris Brewer and Brevard's Aleks Vrvilo were chosen as the AstroTurf SAC Volleyball Co-Specialists of the Week for matches played Oct. 26 – Nov. 1, the League announced today.
Stumpff, a senior from Iowa City, Iowa, led the Bulldogs to an undefeated week that included key Conference wins as she notched 4.45 kills per set and piled up a .405 hit percentage to go along with 49 kills. In a five set match against Conference No. 2 Carson-Newman, Stumpff recorded career highs as she posted 27 kills and 22 digs, adding three blocks and an ace in the contest. A week high attack percentage of .522 was achieved against Coker as Stumpff had zero errors on 23 swings in three sets of action. The senior finished the week with ten kills and a .450 attack percentage in a sweep against LMU. Wingate pushed their winning streak to 16 matches while Stumpff leads the SAC in kills per set and aces per set. The honor marks her first Player of the Week nod this season.
Brewer, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, dished out 11.45 assists per set, while also posting 41 digs on the week, bringing Wingate to a 17-1 record in the SAC. In her first match of the week, Brewer started off with 36 assists, 12 digs and three kills against Coker. Three days later in an important Conference match against Carson-Newman, Brewer posted 49 assists and 21 digs while chipping in five kills in five sets. Against Lincoln Memorial 41 assists were recorded, bringing her weekly total to 126. She also registered six kills in six swings in a match where Wingate posted the fifth highest hitting percentage in League history at .551. The senior setter is ranked second in the SAC with 10.04 assists per set. The award is her second Specialist of the Week plaudit this season.
Vrvilo, a junior from Beaverton, Ore., had a big week as she posted record breaking numbers for the Tornados and climbed up the Conference record books. In Brevard's match against Lenoir-Rhyne, Vrvilo recorded a career high 47 digs, a number that is now tied for fifth most in a single match in SAC history and is an all-time Brevard record. She continued the week by adding 34 digs in a win against Anderson and 27 against Newberry. In total, the defensive specialist had 108 digs, placing her second in the Conference and second in digs per set. She also chipped in 11 assists on the week as well as three service aces. The honor marks her second Specialist of the Week award this season.
