The South Atlantic Conference Announces Volleyball Players of the Week, Sept. 8
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Volleyball Players of the Week for matches played Aug. 31 – Sept. 6. Carson-Newman outside hitter Molly Locke was tabbed the Player of the Week, while Newberry's Maggie Marsh was tabbed Specialists of the Week.
Locke, a senior from College Grove, Tenn., made a big debut for Carson-Newman, putting away a match high 27 kills, 20 digs, and hit .339 to lead the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Quincy on Sept. 4. With this game, Locke became the first Carson-Newman player to record a match with 20 kills and 20 digs since assistant coach Rachel Harper recorded 22 kills and 25 digs on October 19, 2012. The College Grove, Tenn. also became the first player to record over 25 kills in five years. In a victory over Lock Haven on Sept. 5, Locke put up her second double-double of 12 kills and 26 digs. Locke's performance helped lead the Eagles to a 3-1 record last week, cumulating 52 kills and 55 digs. The honor marks her first Player of the Week nod this season.
Marsh, a freshman setter from Charleston, S.C., totaled 158 assists and 8.78 assists per set to lead the Wolves to a 3-1 record last week in her impressive collegiate debut. Marsh began her week with 39 assists and eight digs vs. UNC Pembroke on Sept. 4, and bettered herself next game against Lees-McRae, posting 40 assists and 10 digs. She closed the week with a week-high 42 assists and 13 digs against Belmont Abbey. Marsh also posted 11 kills, five aces and 12 blocks in addition to her three double-doubles against Lees-McRae, Francis Marion and Belmont Abbey. The award is her first Specialist of the Week plaudit this season.
