Lenoir-Rhyne’s Schlegelmilch, Wingate’s McLean Selected as SAC Lacrosse Scholar-Athletes
Following the completion of the first men’s and women’s lacrosse season in SAC history, Lenoir-Rhyne senior Michael Schlegelmilch and Wingate junior Gillian McLean have been chosen as the sports’ Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Following the completion of the first men's and women's lacrosse season in SAC history, Lenoir-Rhyne senior Michael Schlegelmilch and Wingate junior Gillian McLean have been chosen as the sports' Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Schlegelmilch is a finance and sport management at Lenoir-Rhyne, boasting a 3.66 GPA. His academic achievements include selections to the L-R Dean's List and President's List, Alpha Lambda Delta, Chi Alpha Sigma, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Delta Mu Delta, the Lineberger Academic Scholarship, and the Nathan Glattfelder and Ives Bricker Scholarship from the Casper Glattfelder Association of America. Additionally, he has held various leadership positions with the Mauney Economics Club.
The defender appeared in all 14 of Lenoir-Rhyne's games this season, totaling 17 ground balls and five caused turnovers, helping the Bears earn a share of the SAC title.
Away from athletics, Schlegelmilch serves with groups that include Hands on Hickory, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Make-a-Wish Foundation, YMCA and local youth lacrosse clubs. He is also a member of Lenoir-Rhyne's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a Bears of Distinction tour guide.
McLean, meanwhile, carries a 3.83 GPA studying biology at Wingate. She is a member of the Wingate President's List, the Wingate Dean's List, Phi Eta Sigma national honor society and Alphi Chi national honor society.
A team captain, McLean started all eight of Wingate's contests in 2014, finishing with five ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
McLean is a member of the FCA leadership team, and volunteers with United Way Day of Caring, Waterfowl Rescue and Second Harvest Food Bank.
The SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards recognize one student-athlete in each of the conference's 18 sports for excellence in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
