INDIANAPOLIS -- Wingate University senior men’s golfer Braden Jackson has been selected by the NCAA as a postgraduate scholarship recipient for excelling academically and athletically throughout his undergraduate career.
The NCAA postgraduate scholarship is a one-time grant of $7,500 that is awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports every year. In each of the three seasons, there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
“I am so honored and elated to win this prestigious scholarship,” Jackson says. “It is very rewarding to know my hard work and dedication in the classroom and on the golf course has paid off…this is an exclamation point to an amazing four years as a student-athlete at Wingate University.”
An Accounting major and summa cum laude WU graduate, Jackson compiled a 3.945 GPA during his four years as a Bulldog. In June, Jackson was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® at-large first team. He is the first Wingate men’s golf student-athlete to earn Academic All-America® laurels.
“I’m extremely proud of what Braden has accomplished on and off the golf course,” Wingate head men’s golf coach Corey Iacofano says. “This is a huge honor for both Braden and our golf program. I know this scholarship will go a long way in helping him become a CPA.”
Jackson is a two-time winner of the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for men’s golf. A four-year letter winner for the Bulldogs, Jackson compiled an average round score of 75.0 as a senior. He finished second in the Food Lion SAC tournament with a 54-hole total of 220.
Jackson and his 2011-12 Bulldog teammates wrote their names in the record books. For the first time in the school’s NCAA history, Wingate advanced to the NCAA men’s golf play-offs. The Bulldogs earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA event, as they won the Food Lion SAC tournament by a whopping 15 strokes.
Jackson was named to the all-tournament team at the 2012 SAC event. His best performance during the regular season was a tie for fifth place (two-under-par) at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate in October. Jackson shot a season-best 69 in the opening round of the Myrtle Beach event.
The student-athletes selected for the NCAA postgraduate scholarship must be enrolled at NCAA member institutions during their final year of eligibility. In addition, the student-athletes must have performed with distinction as members of varsity teams in the sport for which they were nominated.
NCAA postgraduate scholarship nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 (based on a 4.0 scale), be nominated by the faculty athletics representative or designee and intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a part-time or full-time graduate student.
