Six SAC Student-Athletes Earn Capital One Academic All-District Honors
A total of six student-athletes from the SAC have been selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team, which recognizes top student-athletes for their performances athletically and in the classroom. The At-Large Team includes the SAC-sponsored sports of men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf and women’s golf.
MACLEAN, Va. – A total of six student-athletes from the SAC have been selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team, which recognizes top student-athletes for their performances athletically and in the classroom. The At-Large Team includes the SAC-sponsored sports of men's tennis, women's tennis, men's golf and women's golf.
Representing the conference on the men's team was Tusculum sophomore tennis player Lukas Winkelmann, who has a 3.93 GPA studying pre-medicine. Earlier this spring, Winkelmann was named both the SAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year and SAC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Five female student-athletes earned Academic All-District honors, led by a pair of Newberry golfers – senior Lisa Brandl and sophomore Julia Daneshfar. Brandl has a 3.76 GPA majoring in sport management, while Daneshfar carries a 3.96 GPA in political science.
Joining the Newberry duo on the women's team are Tusculum women's golfer Jillian Corum, Wingate women's tennis player Kellie Ferguson and Catawba women's tennis player Olivia Myers. Corum has a 3.59 GPA studying business administration, Ferguson a 3.84 GPA in chemistry, and Myers a 3.97 GPA majoring in exercise science.
Corum and Ferguson were also the SAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.
Each of the SAC's Capital One Academic All-District selections are now eligible for inclusion on the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which will be selected later this month.
