Wingate Wins 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Championship
NEWTON, N.C. – With five runners finishing in the top 10, Wingate women's cross country team took home the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Championship title Saturday, October 21st at Southside Park in Newton, N.C.
Wingate, who is currently ranked 13th in the NCAA Division II U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) coaches' poll and sits at No. 1 in the Southeast Region top-10 rankings, secured first place with a score of 33. Following in second place was Catawba with a score of 61 and Lenoir-Rhyne in third with a score of 101.
Catawba's Madison Clay took home the SAC Runner of the Year title by covering the 6K course in a time of 20:25.32.
Wingate's Ona Alonso was named the SAC Freshman of the Year, finishing in third with a time of 20:30.69.
Catawba's Jason Bryan was voted the SAC Coach of the Year.
Anderson's Emily Golden was named the 2023 Elite 23 winner after recording a 4.0 GPA with a major in kinesiology. This award honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average (based on a minimum of 48 credit hours) in each of the league's 23 team championship sports.
The NCAA Southeast Regional cross country meet, which will be hosted by University of North Georgia in Oakwood, Ga., is slated to take place Saturday, November 4th.
