The South Atlantic Conference Announces Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, March 23
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens' Nikia Squire was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Women's Outdoor Track Runner of the Week, while Vanisha Wilshire from Wingate was named the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for meets March 14-20, the League announced today.
Squire, a senior from Columbia, S.C., snagged a first place win in the 100 meter dash at the Charlotte 49er Classic to open the outdoor season just one week after becoming the NCAA DII 60 Meter Dash National Champion. Squire clocked the top preliminary time (11.52) on Friday to set a new school record before breaking that record on Saturday with a time of 11.36 in the finals. Additionally, Squire raced with the 4x100 relay team that finished fifth and clocked an NCAA provisional time. Squire's 100 meter time was an NCAA auto qualifier and ranks first in the nation, thus far. She was also named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week following her performance.
Wilshire, a freshman from Louisburg, N.C., had a big weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The SAC Watch List member posted a school-record mark of 11.88 meters in the women's triple jump. The leap makes her a 2016 NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in the triple jump. Also, Wilshire posted a personal-best long jump mark of 5.62 meters. She was the top NCAA Division II finisher in both events at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
