Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team And Award Winners Announced
ROCK HILL, SC - Carson-Newman College coach Phil McNamara, who guided the Lady Eagles to the 2009 South Atlantic Conference championship, was named Women's Soccer Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career, while Lenoir-Rhyne University standout freshman Elizabeth Hawes, who led the conference in goals and points, swept both the 2009 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards.
The Scholar Athlete Award for women's soccer went to Abby Martin of Mars Hill College.
Hawes, a freshman midfielder from Valdese, N.C (East Burke HS), led the league with 17 goals and 41 total points. She becomes the first women's soccer player in conference history to win Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season.

McNamara guided the Lady Eagles to their fifth conference title in the last seven years and was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
Carson-Newman led the way on the All-Conference team with seven selections. Forwards Nikki Brannen and Trenna Howell, midfielder Andrea Saevik, and defender Melissa Morris were named to the first team, while midfielders Sandra Kaelin and Morgan Gruenenfelder and goalie Lauren MacKenzie were named to the second team.
Catawba College had five All-Conference selections. Midfielder Maria Borland and defender Alexa Baird were named to the first team, while forward Stephanie Borland and midfielders Tasha Wilhelm and Katie Gair were named to the second team.
Wingate University placed four on the All-Conference team. Defender Megan Mastalerz was named to the first team, while forwards Kelly Adams and Kerstin Williams and defender Madi Welch were named to the second team.
Tusculum College placed three on the All-Conference team. Midfielder Courtney Turner was named to the first team, while defender Ashley Bradford and forward Tramicka James were named to the second team.
Lenoir-Rhyne also placed three on the All-Conference team. Joining Hawes on the first team from Lenoir-Rhyne are forward Laura Linehan and defender Catherine Hauck.
Newberry College also had three on the All-Conference team. Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades was named to the first team, while midfielder Michaela Peach and defender Sara Geisman were named to the second team.
Lincoln Memorial University had a pair of All-Conference selections. Midfielder Leanne Reid was named to the first team, while Raquel Abrile was named to the second team.
The All-Conference teams are selected by the league's head coaches.
The Fair Play Award for women's soccer went to Tusculum and Carson-Newman. The award goes to the team that demonstrates good sportsmanship in conference play.
Martin is a junior double-majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education with a 3.93 grade point average.
She was the 2007 SAC Freshman of the Year, and was All-Conference and All-Region in 2007 and 2008.
She is a member of Alpha Chi honor society and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team in 2008 and 2009.
Martin is active in campus and community projects, including serving as president of the Mars Hill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also is a member of the Campus Activity Board and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Abby also has helped raise money for Make-A-Wish, and a local family, as well as volunteering for a mission trip to Kenya to help build a church and has supported a child from the Dominican Republic through World Vision for the past four years.
