Six Women’s Soccer Played Named To Academic All-District Team
ROCK HILL, SC -- Six women's soccer players from the South Atlantic Conference, including four from Newberry College, were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III or IV College Division Women's Soccer Teams, it was announced Thursday.
Named to the District 3 first team is Greta Hewett from Newberry. Named to the District III second team are: Sarah Barnes, Newberry; Elizabeth Jones, Newberry; Brooke Tumblin, Newberry and Lauren Whiteley, Catawba. Named to the Disctrict IV First Team is Nicole Ferris from Tusculum.

The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from institutions within that District. District III includes the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. District IV includes college and universities from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio and Michigan.
First team selections go on the national ballot for Academic All-America® honors.
Great Hewett, Sarah Barnes, Elizabeth Jones, Brooke Tumblin
BRISTOL, Conn. - Four Newberry women's soccer players have been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Women's Soccer Team announced officials Thursday. Greta Hewett was named to the First Team, while Sarah Barnes, Elizabeth Jones and Brooke Tumblin were all named to the Second Team.
This is the second straight year that Hewett, a 5-6 senior from Charleston, S.C., has been named First Team Academic All-District. She has a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in Biology and was the leader of a backline that helped to allow just 21 goals in 19 games this season. Hewitt has started every game of her four year career at Newberry and was a 2005 Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference member.
Barnes, a 5-6 senior from Rolla, Mo., has a 3.75 grade point average while majoring in Biology and Chemistry. She has started every game for the Lady Indians this year, notching two assists from her defender position while earning a reputation as one of the best defenders in the South Atlantic Conference. Barnes was named to the preseason All-South Atlantic Conference second team and was named Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference in both 2004 and 2005. This is the first time that Barnes has been named to the Academic All-District team.
Jones, a 5-3 junior from Anchorage Alaska, has a 3.83 grade point average while majoring in Biology. She has provided hard-nosed defense for the Lady Indians, while also recording two assists from her defender position. Jones was named preseason First Team All-South Atlantic Conference as well as 2006 First Team All-South Atlantic Conference and 2006 DAKTRONICS Second Team All-Southeast Region. This is the first time that Jones has been named to the Academic All-District Team.
Tumblin, a 5-3 senior from Florence, S.C., has a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in Political Science. She is leads the team with six assists and is second in both goals, with seven, and points, with 20. Tumblin was named preseason Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference and was a 2006 Academic All-District Team member.
"We are very proud of the way all our student-athletes have performed in the classroom, and especially for these four young ladies as they are great representatives of the team through their commitment to academic excellence," said Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero.
Nicole Ferris
BRISTOL, Conn. --- Tusculum College's Nicole Ferris has been
named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV
College Division Women's Soccer First Team announced officials
Thursday.
Ferris now advances to the Academic All-America® ballot, which
will be announced later this month.
Ferris, a 5-10 junior defender from Lebanon, Ohio returns to the
Academic All-District squad, after earning Second Team honors last
season. She has posted a 3.85 cumulative grade point average while
majoring in Sports Management.
Ferris, a 2007 Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference selection,
has played in all 19 matches this season where she has tallied a
goal and added five assists for her seven total points.
She is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and was named the
TAPHRED Student of the Year in 2006-07. Ferris is also president
of the Physical Education & Sport Studies Club and is serving
as a team captain.
The Pioneers have posted a 14-5 record and are currently ranked No.
18 in the nation (NCAA Division II). Tusculum will face top-seeded
Lincoln Memorial University in a semifinal match of the 2007 Food
Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, this Friday in Rock
Hill, S.C.
Lauren Whiteley
SALISBURY, NC - Catawba College senior forward, Lauren Whiteley (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS), has been named to the ESPN The Magazine 2007 Women's Soccer College Division All-Academic Team for District III. Whiteley has a 3.76 GPA as a psychology major.
On the field, Whiteley has scored four goals and added seven
assists, which ranks second on the team. She has helped lead
Catawba into the league tournament semifinals where the Lady
Indians will face Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday at 6 p.m. at the
Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, SC.
