Three Women’s Soccer Players Earn Academic All-American Honors
Three South Atlantic Conference women's soccer players were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® women's soccer team.
Wingate's Heather Schlick and Carson-Newman's Stacey Thomas were named to the First Team, while Catawba's Hayley Bollinger was named to the Third Team.
Six of the 12 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® women's soccer first team (college division) have 4.00 cumulative grade point averages. The overall average GPA of the first team members is a 3.95.
Student-athletes selected for Academic All-America® honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. Members must possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Student-athletes are nominated by their sports information directors.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Wingate
Wingate University senior defender Heather Schlick (Prior Lake, Minn.) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® women's soccer first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Schlick is a repeat performer; she earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® third team honors in 2005.

Earlier this month, Schlick earned ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District III women's soccer first team honors. District III
(college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools
(Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North
and South Carolina. Schlick is a Spanish major with a minor in
Communication Studies. She has a perfect 4.00 GPA.
Since January 1, 2000, Wingate University has produced 21 Academic All-America® selections. Wingate entered the 2006-07 academic year ranked sixth among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000s. Schlick gives Wingate 30 Academic All-America® selections all-time, tops in the South Atlantic Conference.
A four-year starter for the Bulldogs, Schlick helped anchor one of the top defenses in the South Atlantic Conference in 2006. Wingate allowed only 26 goals in 19 matches this season. In addition, Schlick contributed three goals during her career.
Schlick is an active volunteer in the community. She helps out at Wingate Elementary School, working with Hispanic children. Schlick was honored as the SAC Scholar Athlete for women's soccer. The SAC Scholar Athlete award is bestowed upon only one student-athlete in each of the league's 14 sports.
During the spring semester of 2006, Schlick participated in the Semester at Sea program. About 750 college students traveled to ten countries in four months during the Semester at Sea trip.
Schlick and her shipmates performed service projects in each country they visited, including an Operation Hunger project in South Africa and working at an orphanage in Myanmar. In addition, the Semester at Sea participants donated money to the Amazonian people in Brazil and surveyed the economic problems in Chennai, India.
Carson-Newman
Carson-Newman women's soccer player Stacey Thomas has been named First Team Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The senior defender from Springfield, Ohio, started 19 of 20 games for the Lady Eagles and led the team to the 2006 South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles. She was the anchor of a C-N defense that held opponents to a 0.97 goals scored average. Thomas earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Mathematics all of her four years at Carson-Newman.
Catawba
Catawba College women's soccer defender, Hayley Bollinger, has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Bollinger, from Simpsonville, SC, is a business major with a 3.98 GPA. She was named to the third team.
Bollinger, a two-time Academic All-District selection, makes Academic All-America honors for the first time. In 2006, the former Hillcrest High School standout, made 17 starts over 20 matches and had one assist as a defender. She helped the team to eight shutouts in 2006 and 44 in her career.
