SAC Places Nine on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Teams
ROCK HILL, SC -- The South Atlantic Conference placed seven members on the ESPN The Magazine 2006 Women's Soccer Academic All-District III team, while two more earned recognition from District IV.
Earning the honor were Lauren Ebersole and Hayley Bollinger from Catawba; Alexis Randazzo and Heather Schlick; Greta Hewett and Brooke Tumblin from Newberry; and Amanda Rossie from Presbyterian. Tusculum's Nicole Ferris and Ashley Moreira were recognized for District IV.
Catawba
Catawba College seniors Hayley Bollinger (Simpsonville, SC) and Lauren Ebersole (Hagerstown, MD) have been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine District III Women's Soccer College Division Academic team. Both earned first team honors and will advance to the National All-America ballot.
Bollinger, who also earned Academic All-District honors in 2004, made 17 starts over 20 matches this season and had one assist as a defender. She helped the team to eight shutouts in 2006 and 44 in her career. She is a business major with a 3.98 GPA.
Ebersole, a midfielder, started five of 20 matches this season. She scored one goals and added a pair of assists and tallied six goals with 10 assists in her career. A political science major with a 3.91 GPA, Ebersole helped Catawba to 60 wins over her four seasons.
Wingate
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior defender Heather Schlick (Prior Lake, Minn.) and junior forward Alexis Randazzo (Avon, Conn.) have been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III women's soccer first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
Wingate was one of only two schools from the Carolinas with two first-team selections. Catawba College also earned two first team Academic All-District III women's soccer team laurels. District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina.
The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (by districts) selected the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III women's soccer team. Eleven student-athletes were named first team Academic All-District III in women's soccer. Schlick, Randazzo and the other nine first team members will advance to the national ballot. Both Schlick and Randazzo have perfect 4.00 GPA. Schlick is a Spanish major with a minor in Communication Studies. Randazzo is an English major.
In 2005, Schlick was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® third team. A four-year starter, Schlick helped anchor one of the top defenses in the South Atlantic Conference in 2006. Wingate allowed only 26 goals in 19 matches this season. In addition, Schlick contributed three goals during her career.
Schlick is an active volunteer in the community. She helps out at Wingate Elementary School, working with Hispanic children. Schlick was honored as the SAC Scholar Athlete for volleyball. The SAC Scholar Athlete award is bestowed upon only one student-athlete in each of the league's 14 sports.
Randazzo was a second team All-South Atlantic Conference selection in 2006. She was Wingate's leading scorer with seven goals and five assists (19 points) this season. Randazzo, Schlick and their teammates helped Wingate achieve a ranking in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional top 10 poll for most of the season.
Both Schlick and Randazzo participated in the Semester at Sea program during the spring semester of 2006. They performed several service projects in foreign countries during their time aboard.
Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. He must possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution.
Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a private four-year co-educational institution offering students active learning opportunities through personalized instruction, faith nurturing, career development, community service and study abroad.
Wingate offers more than 37 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, education, fine arts, music and sport sciences. It also offers pre-professional programs and graduate degrees in business, education, physical education and sport administration. In the spring of 2007, Wingate University will award its first-ever doctor of pharmacy degrees. Bulldog student-athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division II sports.
Newberry
BRISTOL, Conn. - Newberry College defender Greta Hewett and forward Brooke Tumblin have been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Women's Soccer Team announced officials Thursday. Hewett was named to the first team, while Tumblin earned second team honors.
This marks the first time the Newberry women's soccer program has earned such awards.
Hewett, a 5-6 junior from Charleston, S.C., has earned a 3.95 grade point average majoring in biology and was one of three field players who started every match for Newberry this season. She was named to the preseason all-South Atlantic Conference first team and collected two assists. Hewett was also a postseason all-South Atlantic Conference second team pick in 2005 and was named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2004 and 2005.
Tumblin, a 5-3 junior from Florence, S.C., has a 3.75 grade point average while majoring in political science, and totalled 14 points on six goals and two assists for the Lady Indians this season. Four of her six goals were game-winners. Tumblin now has 22 goals in her three-year career at Newberry. She was a preseason all-South Atlantic Conference pick in 2005 and was named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2004 and 2005.
"We are very proud of the academic accomplishments of all of our student-athletes," head coach Juan Pablo Favero said. "Greta and Brooke have earned a great honor, and they are a good example of the kind of student-athlete we want representing Newberry College."
The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from institutions within District III, which includes the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Presbyterian
BRISTOL, Conn. - Presbyterian's Amanda Rossie has been named to the 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Women's Soccer Team it was announced on Thursday by Presbyterian officials.
Rossie was chosen to the second team.
A senior this past season, Rossie concluded her final season with the Lady Blue Hose with two goals and one assist in 2006.
In the classroom, Rossie currently owns a 3.83 grade point average as an English major.
The Lilburn, Ga. native was a team captain for the Lady Blue Hose in the 2005 season and has been a member of the SAC Honor Roll for all three of her previous years at PC. The midfielder is also currently the the Editor-in-Chief of the school's student newspaper, The Blue Stocking.
Tusculum
BRISTOL, Conn. --- Tusculum College defenders Nicole Ferris and Ashley Moreira have been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Soccer Team announced officials Thursday. Ferris was named to the All-District Second Team, while Moreira garnered Third Team honors.
Ferris, a 5-10 sophomore from Lebanon, Ohio, has posted a 3.93 cumulative grade point average while majoring in Sports Management. Ferris has started in every match for the Pioneers since her arrival on the Greeneville, Tenn. campus, including all 17 contests this year. She was named to the 2005 South Atlantic Conference Tournament Team and is also a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Moreira, a 5-8 senior from London, Ontario, Canada, is majoring in English Education at Tusculum with a 3.67 GPA. Moreira is a two-time All-Conference selection and was named to the 2005 NSCAA Division II All-Region First Team. She is currently tied as the school's all-time assists leader with 31 helpers. Moreira leads the team with seven assists to go along with a goal for her nine points. She has started in all 76 matches she has played in at Tusculum.
Ferris and Moreira anchor one of the top defensive units in NCAA Division II. The Pioneers are 12th in the nation in team goals against average (0.52) and have posted 11 shutouts this season (9th in NCAA II).
Tusculum (12-2-3), ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, will face
Armstrong Atlantic State University in the opening match of the
2006 NCAA II Southeast Region Tournament , held this weekend at
McCown Field in Jefferson City, Tenn. The second-seeded Pioneers
will face the No. 3 Pirates for an 11:30 a.m. match on the
Carson-Newman College campus.
The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is selected by
members of the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA) from institutions within District IV, which includes the
states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
Tusculum is making its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and third national postseason appearance in four years.
