Carson-Newman claims 2006 Food Lion SAC Women’s Soccer Tournament Title on Penalty Kick Shootout
HICKORY, NC - Carson-Newman, ranked seventh in NCAA II, claimed the title at 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, defeating Catawba in a penalty kick shootout on Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. The game is officially listed as a tie as the teams played to a 1-1 draw through overtime. The Lady Eagles are now 16-1-1, while the Catawba Indians are 12-4-4 and will await word for a possible NCAA Tournament bid.
Catawba scored just 58 seconds into the match when freshman Jenna Peeples (Longmont, CO) scored in the box on one touch off a cross from the right side by fellow freshman Tasha Wilhelm (Mount Savage, MD). The goal was Peeples' first of the 2006 season.
Carson-Newman tied it in the ninth minute after Megan Julian (Knoxville, TN) finished off a cross from Erica Stegner (Nicholasville, KY). However, neither team was able to score the rest of the way despite Carson-Newman' s 17-7 advantage in shots. Catawba's Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) stopped five shots while Carson-Newman's Nyssa Griffin (Adelaide, AUSTRLIA) made four saves. The shootout results were not released.
