MATTHEWS, N.C. - The Limestone Saints earned their first SAC Women's Lacrosse title in program history as the Saints defeated Wingate 10-9 at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Sunday (April 28).
Both teams scored a pair of goals in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs entered the half with a 6-5 lead. The Saints then scored five goals in the second half of play to secure the championship crown. Limestone's Reese Hjertaas led her team with three goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. For her efforts, she was named the SAC Tournament MVP. Deirdre Jones posted two goals, including the game winner, while Joscelin Martin, Sarah Dudick, Keira Martin, Brooke Surace, and Cassandra Peat each scored a goal apiece.
Bailey Stumpf led the Saints defensively, recording four ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Emma McCoy collected three ground balls while making six saves in goal.
Wingate's Leah Knowles led the scoring for the Bulldogs as she recorded a game-high four goals with a ground ball, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls.
The selection show for the 2024 NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse Tournament will take place Sunday, May 5.
