GREENVILLE, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The No. 3 seed Tusculum Pioneers outscored the No. 1 seed Anderson Trojans 48-28 in the second half to secure a 61-49 win and the 2020 SAC Pilot Flying J Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday (March 8). With the win, the Pioneers improve to 24-7 on the year, while Anderson falls to 26-5.
It was a battle of defenses in the first 20 minutes of action as neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm and Anderson took a narrow 21-13 lead into the break.
Tusculum turned up the defensive pressure to start the second half with a full-court press and turned 21 Trojan turnovers in 17 points and an eventual tournament championship.
Leading the charge for the Pioneers was Mia Long with a game-high 22 points and five rebounds, followed by Kasey Johnson's 15 points and eight boards.
A trio of Trojans netted double figures with Alexy Mollenhauer and McKenzie Gadson pouring in 15 points each and Taylor Hair adding 10 points. Mollenhauer also pulled down eight rebounds and Gadson had four assists.
Long was named the championship's Most Valuable Player, along with earning All-Tournament honors. The fill All-Tournament team is listed below.
