AIKEN, S.C.--With regular season play and conference tournaments completed, the 2005-06 Daktronics Division II Women's Basketball South Atlantic All-Region teams have been released. Six of the 10 players selected will be competing in this week's NCAA Division II Tournament. Each of the three conferences in the region is well represented. The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) had four selections each while the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) had two.
Tanetra Barrett of Wingate University has been selected as the 2005-06 South Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Joining Barrett on the First-Team are: Nastassia Boucicault (Shaw University), Cassie King (North Carolina Central), Yakeeshia Ross (USC Upstate), and Celeste Trahan (Elizabeth City State).
The Second-Team members are: Kristi Ferris (Mars Hill), Shelcey Harp (Clayton State), Audosha Kelley (Armstrong Atlantic State), Jasmine Patterson (Clayton State), and Allyson Swailes (Bowie State).
Barrett, a 5-5 junior guard from Marshville, N.C., led the South Atlantic Conference in scoring at 19.7 ppg and had the top field goal percentage at .551. In leading Wingate to a 23-6 overall mark and the SAC regular season championship, Barrett will be competing in this week's NCAA Tournament as the Lady Bulldogs received the number two seed. Barrett, a two-time SAC Player of the Year, ranks in the top 25 in Division II in both scoring and field goal percentage.
Boucicault, a 5-6 senior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., is a First-Team All-CIAA selection after leading the Lady Bears to a 26-4 regular season record averaging 15.5 ppg. Taking home both the regular season and conference tournament titles, Shaw will host the NCAA South Atlantic Regional for the third-straight year. During the year, Boucicault ranked in the top five in the CIAA in assists, steals, three-point field goal percentage, and three-point field goal percentage.
King, a 6-0 junior forward from Wendell, N.C., is a two-time All-CIAA performer and a Daktronics Second-Team All-Region honoree last year. In 2005-06, King led the team to a 22-6 record and an at-large bid in this week's NCAA Tournament. King averaged 18.6 ppg and 9.1 rpg in starting 26 of 28 games played. She ranks in the top 10 in the CIAA in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocked shots, and free throw percentage.
Ross, a 6-1 senior center from Spartanburg, S.C., was named the 2006 PBC Player of the Year after averaging a double double with 16.2 ppg and 10.4 rpg. In leading the Spartans to a 16-13 record, a third-place finish in the PBC, and an at-large bid in NCAA Tournament, Ross became the school's all-time blocked shots and rebounding leader. In addition, she became the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 points and has posted 16 double doubles this season.
Trahan, a 6-2 sophomore from Stockton, Calif., was named to last year's Daktronics All-Region Second-Team. This year Trahan, a five-time CIAA Player of the Week, earned All-CIAA honors after leading the CIAA in scoring at 19.5 ppg and rebounding with 14.6 rpg. She was also first in blocked shots at 2.0 bpg. Her team finished 20-9 and just missed out on an NCAA Tournament bid.
First-Team selections will now go on the national ballot for All-America consideration.
