Tusculum’s Maples, Carson-Newman’s Cate Named to Women’s Basketball All-District Teams
Tusculum College senior Julie Maples and Carson-Newman sophomore Amy Cate have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV Women's Basketball Team. Maples was chosen for the first team, and Cate is a third team selection.
CLEVELAND --- Tusculum College senior Julie Maples has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV Women's Basketball Team, announced College officials Thursday.
Maples earns All-District distinction for the third time and First Team status for the second straight year.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Maples has led the Pioneers in scoring in each of the last three seasons and is a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference guard and a member of the 2001-02 SAC All-Freshmen Team. Her 15.6 scoring average last season ranked sixth in the league.
Maples has a 3.99 cumulative grade point average majoring in English Education. She was the 2002-03 and 2003-04 South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete for women's basketball, and has been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Dean's List and Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.
Maples advances to the Academic All-America® ballot, which will be announced Mar. 3.
The Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from institutions within District IV, which includes the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
Tusculum College, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, USA, is a NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference which is comprised of eight colleges and universities in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman sophomore Amy Cate (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Women's basketball team. Cate is a third-team selection.
Cate has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Physical Education. She is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, the Carson-Newman Dean's List and the National Dean's List. Cate is a member of Alpha Chi Honors Society, is a Presidential Scholar and has the highest grade point average in the sophomore class.
Cate is averaging 4.6 points per game for the Lady Eagles this season. A two sport-athlete, Cate advanced to the NCAA Division II Track and Field National Championships last spring.
