Lenoir-Rhyne’s Clary, Mars Hill’s Ferris, Wingate’s Taylor Named to Daktronics Women’s Basketball All-Region Team
The South Atlantic Conference placed three players on the 2003-04 Daktronics Division II Women's Basketball South Atlantic All-Region team, it has been announced.
Lenoir-Rhyne College's Crystal Clary was named to the First Team, and goes on the national ballot. Mars Hill College guard Kristi Ferris and Wingate University's Veronica Taylor were named to the Second Team.
Clary, a 6-1 junior center from Hampton, Va., leads the nation in rebounding (12.8 rpg) and field goal percentage (65.6) and is third in Division II in scoring (21.4 ppg). Named South Atlantic All-Conference First-Team All-Conference, Clary posted 20 double doubles on the season.
Ferris was also a First Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection.
Ferris led the Lions in scoring and free throw shooting and was second on the team in field goal percentage and third in rebounding. Ferris met the criteria to be ranked in seven of the 10 categories kept by the SAC. She led the SAC in free throw shooting percentage (.843); ranked fifth in scoring (16.0); sixth in field goal percentage (.512); ninth in assists (2.64); eleventh in steals (1.68); thirteenth in rebounding (5.9); and fifteenth in blocks (0.39).
Her free throw shooting percentage ranked her 32nd in the nation among all Division II women's basketball players. Ferris, just a sophomore, will return to a team that finished the 2003-04 campaign 16-12 overall and 8-6 in the SAC that placed them fourth in the league standings. The Lions lost three seniors off this year's squad.
Taylor was also a First Team All-Conference selection after helping to lead the Bulldogs to a share of the conference regular season championship. Taylor finished fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 16.2 points, and fourth in rebounding at 8.6 per game.
