GREENEVILLE TENN. - The sixth-seeded Tusculum Pioneers softball team finished off a thrilling conference campaign by winning their semifinal game and championship game all in one day. The Pioneers downed top seed Lincoln Memorial in the final came 8-0, Tusculum is now 22-17 on the season.
In the first inning neither team could score a run until the pioneers put two runs on the board in the second and third inning. Tusculum secured a large margin of runs in the fifth inning where they scored five and added one more in the top of the seventh to win the championship.
Individually, Anna Alloway scored two home runs while teammates Alexis Grampp, Chloe Freischmidt and Emily Sappington scored one home run each. On the mound for all seven innings was Emily Sappington who faced 25 batters while striking out five and walking only one.
By virtue of the title, Tusculum has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The NCAA selection show is scheduled for May 16 and at that time the Pioneers will learn of their destination and seed. The rest of the SAC teams will await to hear of their postseason fate as well.
The All-Tournament team and Most Valuable Player will be announced on Tuesday.
