The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week Honors

Newberry utility player Haley Simonds has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Player of the Week and Tusculum right-hander Taylor Plemons has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Mar. 5-11, the League announced today.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Newberry utility player Haley Simonds has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Player of the Week and Tusculum right-hander Taylor Plemons has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Mar. 5-11, the League announced today.

Simonds, a sophomore from Pasadena, Md., had an outstanding week, as she led the Wolves to a 6-0 record. She collected at least one hit in each game, batting .682 for the week with four doubles, two triples, two home runs, six runs scored and 18 RBI. She also made two appearances in the circle for the Wolves, throwing two innings, allowing just one hit and picking up a save.

Plemons, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., went 2-0 with a save in three appearances last week. She threw back-to-back five-hit shutouts against Belmont Abbey and Goldey-Beacom, and finished the week allowing just two earned runs in 15 innings of work. In her first appearance, Plemons pitched three innings and struck out four while earning her first career save in a 9-5 win over Belmont Abbey in game one of a doubleheader with the Crusaders. In the second game, Plemons struck out three and scattered five hits as the Pioneers claimed a 10-0 victory in six innings. In her final showing for the week, Plemons returned to the circle against Goldey-Beacom and held the Lightning to five hits while striking out four in an 8-0 victory.

These are the first Player of the Week selections for Simonds and Plemons this season.
