Wingate’s Helms, Catawba’s Tysinger Earn SAC Softball Weekly Honors
Wingate infielder Mellena Helms and Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger have been named the SAC Softball Players of the Week for games played March 17-23, it was announced on Tuesday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Wingate infielder Mellena Helms and Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger have been named the SAC Softball Players of the Week for games played March 17-23, it was announced on Tuesday.

Helms led Wingate to 5-1 record last week by hitting .556 with six extra-base hits, eight runs scored and eight RBI. She had 15 hits in 27 at-bats, finishing with a .586 on-base percentage and an .815 slugging percentage.
Helms had three hits in both games of a Wingate double-header sweep of Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, three hits in another double-header sweep of Queens on Thursday, and six hits in a series split with Mars Hill on Saturday. She had two doubles and a triple in game one of the Belmont Abbey series, and added three more doubles throughout the week.
The sophomore is hitting .379 on the season, and her 44 hits are second-most in the conference.
SAC Softball Pitcher of the Week | Carley Tysinger, Catawba
Tysinger went 3-0 on the mound for Catawba, posting a 2.45 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 20 innings.
Tysinger opened her week with a complete-game victory at Coker on Thursday, where she set a school record with 15 strikeouts. The sophomore then won both games of a double-header with Carson-Newman on Saturday, combining to allow just three earned runs in 13 innings while striking out 19.
In addition to her strong pitching, Tysinger belted a pair of home runs at the plate. She leads the SAC with 155 strikeouts is tied for the league lead with 14 victories.
