Carson-Newman’s Shoemake, Wingate’s Smith Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Carson-Newman College's Bri Shoemake has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Wingate University's Allison Smith earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending April 17, announced conference officials Monday.
Shoemake, a sophomore catcher from Ooltewah, Tenn. (Ooltewah HS), guided the Lady Eagles to a 3-1 record on the week as she batted .600 (9-for-15). Shoemake, who scored four runs and drove in two runs on the week, went 8-for-8 in Sunday's doubleheader at Wingate with two RBI and two runs scored. She was 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the second game against Brevard on Wednesday. Shoemake wins the award for the second time this season.
Smith earns Pitcher of the Week honors for the second week in a row and third time this season.
A senior from Daleville, Va. (Manhattan College), she went 2-0 on the week, adding a save to lead Wingate to a 3-1 week in league play. Smith had a 2.26 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings of work. She went nine innings at Newberry, allowing two runs while striking out a season-high 12. She pitched 1 1/3 innings in the nightcap without allowing a run, notching the save. She went the distance against Carson-Newman, picking up her 20th win. She shutout the Eagles in the final six innings to lead the 'Dogs to a 5-3 win.
