Carson-Newman’s Hickam, Thorne Named to Regional Softball All-Tourney Team
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Two members of the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles softball team have been selected to the 2005 South Atlantic All-Region Tournament team.
Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.) was named to the team after she batted .600 with three RBIs, a homerun, two doubles and a stolen base in three games in the Regional Tournament last week.
In the first game of the tournament against #20 Columbus State, Hickam went three-for-three with two doubles. In the Lady Eagles upset of #9 North Florida, Hickam was two-for-four with an RBI and produced the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Against fourth-ranked Kennesaw State, Hickam gave the Lady Eagles an early lead as she smacked a solo homerun to left field. For the season, she started every game and batted .254 with 13 doubles and 23 RBIs.
Kim Thorne (Dalton, Ga.) was also named to the All-Tournament team. She batted .272 for the Lady Eagles in the three games in the tournament. Thorne ended the season with a .258 average. She played in all 51 games, drove in 14 runs and threw out 13 base runners on steal attempts.
The Lady Eagles, ranked #24 in the nation, finished the season
with a 40-11 record. They were the regular season and tournament
champions of the South Atlantic Conference.
