Day One Wraps Up at the SAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with Records Falling
HICKORY, N.C. (TheSAC.com) – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's outdoor track and field teams both stand at the top of the leaderboard after day one of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on Thursday, April 18.
Queens leads the way with four gold medalists, while the host, Lenoir-Rhyne, has three. Carson-Newman has two top-tier performers. Catawba, Anderson, and Tusculum have the final three individual honors.
The Royals' Ricko Meckes hurled a championship meet program record javelin throw with a distance of 59.11 meters (193' 11"). Avianna Hopkins won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 47.68 meters (156' 5"), while Aintzane Castarlenas won the pole vault at a height of 3.60 meters (11' 9.75"). Wrapping up the Queens medalist, in the last event of the day, was Lucie Noall in the 10,000 meter run, crossing the line in 38:16.77.
For the Bears, three men earned the top prize in their respective events. Cole Henderson made his mark in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.84 meters (170' 1"). Chris Reichenbach set a new championship meet record in the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters (14' 7.25"), while teammate Jaquay Mitchell set the meet record in the long jump with a 7.30 meter (23' 11.5") leap.
Carson-Newman had champions in both track and field. Amy Zadroga, representing women's field, won the javelin with a distance of 38.23 meters (125' 5"). For men's track, Luke Greer set a championship meet record in the 10,000 meter run, finishing in a time of 30:43.73.
Catawba's MeKayla White took home the gold in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.77 meters (18' 11.25").
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Anderson's Philip Quillen won it for the men in a time of 9:34.80, while Tusculum's Nicole McMillen set a meet record with her finish in 10:49.93.
As for team scores, following Queens is Carson-Newman and Wingate, while on the women's side, behind the Royals are the Bears and Eagles.
The 2019 SAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships will wrap-up on Saturday (Apr. 20) at the Irwin Belk Track.
