The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Tai Smith was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, and Queens' Martin Knauer was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested during the first week of the indoor track & field season, the Conference office announced today.
Smith, a graduate student from Glendale, Ariz., posted an NCAA Division II provisional time and Wingate program record of 14:24.81 in the 5,000-meter run at the Magic City Elite Meet in Birmingham, Ala., last week. His record-setting time was almost a full 29 seconds faster than the previous Wingate record holder.
Knauer, a senior thrower from Wolnzach, Germany, won the shot put at the VMI Team Challenge with a distance of 17.16 meters, which is also good enough for an NCAA Division II provisional mark. In addition to his winning shot put toss, Knauer placed third in the weight throw with a throw of 16.71 meters.
The award is Smith's first Track Athlete of the Week honor this season, and it is Knauer's first Field Athlete of the Week honor this season.
