Tusculum Wins SAC Men's Tennis Championship with 4-1 Win Over Anderson
SUMTER, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Tusculum University won its first South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championship tournament title since 2008 with a 4-1 victory over Anderson University Saturday (April 17) afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
The No. 3 seed Pioneers (17-3) won their eighth consecutive match and third in three days to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Tusculum will be making its first NCAA appearance since the 2008 season and the sixth in program history. The Trojans (12-4) were the No. 5 seed in the tournament field but upset top-seeded Wingate 4-3 to reach the finals.
Tusculum's Vadzim Raitsou was selected SAC Championship Most Valuable Player after going 3-0 in singles at No. 6.
Tusculum outlasted Anderson to win two of the three doubles matches and earn the first point of the afternoon.
In singles, the Pioneers went up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6, but the Trojans cut into the lead as Anderson picked up a win at No. 2. A win at No. 5 singles for the Pioneers gave them the 3-1 lead and Tusculum's Leon Huck picked up the decisive win at No. 4 to give the Pioneers the championship.
Tusculum will participate in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament, which will be held May 7-9 at the University of North Georgia.
