Catawba’s Matthew Nicholson Named Men’s Tennis Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College's Matthew Nicholson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 21, announced conference officials Tuesday.
Nicholson, a freshman from Chawara, Zimbabwe (Lomabundi HS), went undefeated in four singles and four doubles matches last week.
As the last match remaining, Nicholson rallied for a three-set win at No. 6 singles against Tusculum's Drew Kiser for the winning point to give the Indians a 5-4 victory over the Pioneers.
He was the lone singles winner in the loss to Wingate, defeating Wingate's Greg Machado, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7. He also rallied to defeat Carson-Newman's Paul Birdsong, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2. He also defeated Lenoir-Rhyne's Nate Summer, 6-2, 6-0. Nicholson improved his record this season to 16-2 in singles action, which includes a 5-1 mark in league matches.
In double play, Nicholson and Alex Macdonald defeated Wingate's Fernando Montemurro and Ryan Forbes, 8-5; Carson-Newman's Derek Holdway and Dalton Moore, 8-6; Tusculum's Cui Carvalho and Drew Kiser, 8-2; and Lenoir-Rhyne's Graydon Dunn and Nathan Helms, 8-4. Nicholson is 13-5 in doubles play.
