Wingate’s Matthew Lichtenstein Named Men’s Tennis Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Wingate University freshman Matthew Lichtenstein, of Darnestown, Md., has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 23.
Lichtenstein, who sees action at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, helped the Bulldogs to three wins last week, including victories in a pair of league matches.
Lichtenstein posted a perfect 6-0 record, winning all three singles and doubles matches on the week. In singles, the former Northwest High School product, won twice in straights sets and rallied from a set down to win his match against Newberry's Pavle Popovic in a third set super tiebreaker 16-14.
In doubles, Lichtenstein teamed with Jose Valerezo for three wins. The duo rallied from a 4-1 deficit to claim a key point in a 6-3 win over Barton. They won 8-3 in both the 8-1 win over Catawba and 6-3 win over Newberry.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors.
