The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Men's Soccer Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Men's Soccer Players of the Week for matches played between Sept. 5 and Sept. 10. Carson-Newman forward Tobias Solem Karlsen was named the offensive player of the week, while Newberry goalkeeper Leroy Zeller was named defensive player of the week.
Solem Karlsen, a senior from Kongsvinger, Norway, recorded the seventh multi-goal game of his career, scoring four goals in the span of eight minutes and 26 seconds in the Eagles' season-opening 7-0 win over North Greenville. He put all eight of his shots on frame, scoring on four of them, including putting away the first and eventual game-winning goal. This is Solem Karlsen's first offensive player of the week honor of the year.
Zeller, a freshman from Zulpich, Germany, led the Wolves to a pair of shutout victories to begin his collegiate career. He made two saves in Newberry's 2-0 win over USC Aiken to begin the year, and followed up that performance with a four save 1-0 shutout win over Belmont Abbey. For the week, Zeller made six saves and allowed no goals in 180 minutes between the posts. This is the first defensive player of the week honor for Zeller this season.
