Wingate’s Robert Dawson Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Honors in Men’s Soccer
Waltham, Mass.----Wingate University senior forward Robert Dawson (Manchester, England) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® men's soccer third team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Dawson earns Academic All-America® honors for the first time in his career.
Earlier this month, Dawson earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III men's soccer first team honors. District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina. Dawson sports a 3.53 GPA in his History major.
Since January 1, 2000, Wingate University has produced 16 Academic All-America® selections. Wingate entered the 2005-06 academic year tied for sixth among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000s. Dawson gives Wingate 25 Academic All-America® selections all-time, tops in the South Atlantic Conference.
Dawson had nine goals and nine assists (27 points) for the Bulldogs in 2005 as the team compiled a 12-8-2 overall record. A three-time All-South Atlantic Conference pick, Dawson's career totals include 48 goals, 39 assists and six match-winning goals.
In 2003, Dawson led the NCAA Division II in goals scored with 24 and points per match with 3.00. For his efforts, Dawson was named NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II All-America (third team) in 2003. He led the SAC and the Bulldogs in scoring with 54 points (24 goals, six assists) in 2003.
The 2002 SAC Freshman of the Year, Dawson had 11 goals and 15 assists as Wingate won the 2002 Food Lion SAC tournament title. Dawson was also named to the inaugural All-State team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) in 2003.
The Academic All-America® Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
