2004 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams and Award Recipients Announced
ROCK HILL, SC - Tyler Baldock, who helped Carson-Newman to an unbeaten season with his dominating play inside the goal, was named the 2004 South Atlantic Conference men's soccer Player of the Year, and was one of six Eagles named to the All-Conference team, the league announced today.
Baldock, a sophomore from Surrey, Canada, had a 0.69 goals against average and had a save percentage of .855. He recorded eight shutouts in 13 matches.
Wingate's James Lavery, who was third in the conference with 0.64 assists per match, was named Freshman of the Year. Lavery, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, becomes the third player in a row from Wingate to win the award.
Carson-Newman coach Allen Vital, who guided the Eagles to a 15-0-1 record and a number one national ranking during the season, was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and third time in his career.
The Scholar Athlete Award for men's soccer went to Michael D. Wright of Presbyterian College.
Wright, a senior defender from Socastee, S.C., has a 4.0 GPA as a history and political science major. He is a Rhodes Scholar nominee and received the 2004-05 Independent College Student of the Year Award from the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. He was one of six nationwide recipients of the Pi Kappa Phi National Scholar Award and has received the Presbyterian College Student Leader of the Year Award and the Presbyterian College Parent's Council Leadership Award.
Wright is a three-year letterwinner for the Blue Hose, where he has been a key substitute and part-time starter on a Blue Hose defense which ranked second in the league in goal against average this season.
He is one of Presbyterian College's top campus leaders, serving on numerous campus committees and organization boards, including the PC Unite Steering Committee, a diversity and understanding group; Academic Affairs; Student Life; Student Government Finance Committee; Religious Life, Conservation Committee; Constitution Committee; NCAA Strategic Planning Commission and PC's 135th Anniversary Committee. He also helps in the community by volunteering with Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Big Brother.
Joining Baldock on the First Team from Carson-Newman are forward Marius Arnesen, midfielder Brad Cobbs and defender Sean Guiseppi. Forward Alex De Oliveria and midfielder Brad Collins were named to the Second Team.
Tusculum College placed five on the squad, with two making First Team: Forward Paul Hopkins, who led the conference in points per match; and midfielder Gerald Watt. Forward Andre Nesfield and defenders Jay Harris and Matt Cuthbert were named to the Second Team.
Catawba had four All-Conference selections, with three named to the First Team. Forward Zay-Zay Gilewala, midfielder Nathan Zuzga and defender Kenny Crowe were selected to the First Team, while forward Gareth Turnbull was a Second Team choice.
Wingate had three All-Conference picks, with all named First Team. Representing the Bulldogs are forward Benj Bostic, who led the SAC in goals per match, Lavery at midfield and defender Thomas Szvetitz.
Lenoir-Rhyne defender Ben Clark was a First Team choice, with goalkeeper Jonathan Sandlin on the Second Team.
Mars Hill, Newberry and Presbyterian each placed two representatives on the Second Team.
Midfielder Ryan Minor and defender William Dolbeer were selected from Mars Hill. Recognized from Newberry were midfielder Brandon Cockrell and defender Miles Childers. Presbyterian placed forward Trent Weber and midfielder Brandon Tucker on the squad.
