Queens' Dolan and Dishman Named South Atlantic Conference Lacrosse Scholar-Athletes of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens' Eric Dolan was voted the South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while the Royals' Sydney Dishman earned the women's honor, the League announced today. The pair earned the honor for their achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
Dolan, from Hopkinton, Mass., graduated from Queens with a 3.9 GPA in accounting. He was named to the Dean's List in each of his four years with the Royals and was a member of the Janusian Order Honor Society as a sophomore. Dolan was inducted to Beta Gamma Sigma, while earning an internship with the Ford Motor Company in its finance department.
Dolan was tabbed an All-American his sophomore year after earning first-team All-South Atlantic Conference and SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player plaudits. He earned Astroturf Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in his career and came into this past season as a Preseason All-American. He currently holds the Queens record for saves in a game with 22 and set the Queens standard for wins in a season during his junior year with 12. The two-time team captain owns the Queens' single season saves record with 208 and is the program's record holder in career saves with 727.
In the community, Dolan has been a volunteer with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system each year at Queens and lead the men's lacrosse team in raising nearly $5,000 for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. As a member of the Janusian Order Honor Society, he served as the treasurer and helped lead service projects for Toys for Tots and Sedgefield Elementary School in Charlotte.
Dolan was selected for the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School and upon graduation from the school will commission as a 2nd Lieutenant for the Marines.
Dishman, from Hollywood, Md., graduated from Queens with a 3.92 GPA in biology. She has been member of the Queens honors program since her freshman year and earned Dean's List honors all four years of her career. A four-time Byrum Scholar, Dishman has been a member of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society for the past three years. During Dishman's junior year she was awarded the Virginia L. Martin Scholarship.
"Sydney has been such a pleasure to have as a leader for our program both on and off the field," said head women's lacrosse coach Julika Blankenship. "She continues to impress me with her academic rigors and she is equally as impressive on the field leading her defensive unit. She is a poster child for Queens athletics and Queens women's lacrosse. I look forward to following her successes as she heads on to continue her education. She has left a huge mark on each of the Royals she has come in contact with."
On the field, Dishman was named the squad's Co-Defensive MVP after her junior season. Dishman earned first team All South Atlantic Conference defender honors this past season after earning honor mention All-SAC honors twice in her career.
Dishman is an active volunteer in the community as she has volunteered with Build 4 Cause during her sophomore, junior and senior years. As a junior, she served as the Club Executive. She has also helped out as a clinical volunteer in Peru and worked with Operation Christmas Child.
On campus, Dishman was a supplemental chemistry instructor at Queens and was a subject tutor in biology, chemistry and physics.
