The South Atlantic Conference Announces Men's Lacrosse Annual Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens attacker Garrett Chan was voted the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, while Daniel Godwin from Wingate was voted the League's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Wingate mentor Michael Lawson was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
Chan, a senior from Port Coquitlam, B.C., finished the 2016 regular season ranked No. 5 in the nation with 2.47 assists per game and No. 12 in Division II with 4.60 points per game. He scored 32 goals on the year to rank No. 6 in the League and finish the season with a League-best 70 points. Chan posted seven multi-goal games this season, including a season-high five scores in a win over Belmont Abbey. He also handed out multiple assists in 10 contests on the season and highlighted his year with eight assists and nine points as Queens downed Alderson-Broaddus 20-11 on Feb. 13.
Godwin, a midfielder from Greensboro, N.C., recorded 23 goals and currently ranks No. 3 in the South Atlantic Conference with 19 assists. His 42 points on the season is good for No. 7 in the South Atlantic Conference. Godwin scored in 13 contests for the Bulldogs during the 2016 season campaign, including seven contests with multiple goals. He also dished out an assist in 12 games this season and posted multiple assists in six contests. Godwin was also named the AstroTurf SAC Offensive Player of the Week on March 7.
Lawson coached his squad to a 7-1 record in South Atlantic Conference play and a 10-5 record overall. The Wingate offense handed out 96 assists on the season to rank No. 17 in Division II, while its 6.40 assists per game was good for No. 23 in the country. Defensively, the Bulldogs are currently No. 10 in the country in man down defense as they allow a score just 77 percent of the time in man down situations, while the Bulldogs' defense allowed just 9.40 goals per game to rank No. 21 in the country on the year. Wingate tops the League in goals against average and closed out the regular season on an eight-game winning streak.
The first team attackers were Chan of Queens, Mike Hanlon from Lenoir-Rhyne, and Mike Martiello of Coker. Lenoir-Rhyne's Carson Sterling, Spencer Corkery of Queens and Godwin earned first team midfielder honors.
On the defensive side, Collin Lett from Lenoir-Rhyne was named the first team long pole midfielder, while Chris Gazzio of Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne's Colin Twombly and Brady Richardson collected first team defender honors. Jacob Ormerod from Wingate was tabbed the first team goalkeeper and Catawba's Connor Eakes was voted the first team specialist.
