Limestone Tied for 12th Following Day One of NCAA Championship

DEARBORN, MICH. – The nationally fifth-ranked Limestone University men's golf team got off to a great start on the first day of the NCAA Division II National Championship, sitting at just 3-over at the turn, but had a rough go on the back nine to wrap up Monday's opening round with a combined score of 305 (+17).

INSIDE THE SCORECARD
- Limestone started the opening round on fire, moving into first place at one point with a 3-under
- While the Saints stumbled a bit over a few holes on the front nine, the team was 3-over at the turn
- The Blue and Gold had a tough time on the back nine, combining for 14-over the rest of the day
- Posting just eight bogeys on the front nine, Limestone had 19 on the back to go with two doubles
- Conversely, the Saints had five birdies on the front nine, but only three over the last nine holes
- The Blue and Gold posted a day-one 305 (+17) and it tied for 12th on the team leaderboard
- Sophomore Pontus Samuelsson (Linkoping, Sweden) paced the Saints with a first-round 72 (E)
- Samuelsson carded a 34 (-2) on the front nine, but had a double bogey on the par-4 10th
- The 2022 SAC Champion birdied twice on the back nine to finish the opening day in the top-10
- Sophomore Kristoffer Larsson (Vadstena, Sweden) bogeyed on hole one but birdied on the third
- Larsson was even through seven, but four bogeys the rest of the way gave him a first-day 76 (+4)
- Junior Gage Carnes (Winter Haven, Fla.) was cruising following a birdie on the par-5 7th
- Carnes was even after a birdie on 11, but five bogeys over the last seven holes put him at 77 (+5)
- Senior Levi Moody (Greenville, S.C.) birdied on the par-5 3rd and was at 1-under through five
- However, a triple on six followed by a total of six bogeys would end his day with score of 80 (+8)
- Graduate Max Kalfjall (Vasby, Sweden) tallied a 39 (+3) on the front nine, but a 42 (+6) on the back pushed him down the leaderboard as he wrapped up the day for Limestone with an 81 (+9)
NOTABLES
- Limestone carded its highest round since day three of the DI Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate
- While the Saints tallied a first-day 305 (+17), they are only five strokes back of the cutoff
- No. 23 Indianapolis leads the team field following an even 288 on Monday
- Top-ranked Barry is two strokes off the lead while No. 2 Arkansas Tech in nine strokes back
- No. 11 Central Missouri currently holds the cutoff at eighth place with a day-one 300 (+12)
- No. 3 Lee is ninth with a 301 (+13) while No. 4 North Georgia and Missouri-St. Louis are 10th
- Limestone is in a three-way tie with Findlay and Grand Valley State at 17-over
- The Saints trail both North Georgia and Missouri-St. Louis by a stroke and Lee by four strokes
- The Blue and Gold have a one stroke advantage over No. 14 Midwestern State
- UIndy's Oliver Mast fired a day-one 69 (-3) to move to the top of the individual leaderboard
- Samuelsson is tied for ninth place, one stroke from the top-5 and three strokes off the leader
- Larsson sits in a tie for 44th and Carnes for 54th, but both are within striking distance of the top-10
- Moody needs to make up seven strokes for a run at the top-10 while Kalfjall will need eight
- Larsson, Moody, and Samuelsson were each named to the DII PING All-South Region Team
