Newberry Wins 2011 Men’s Golf Championship
CONOVER, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team shot a 900 (+36) to win the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship which concluded Tuesday at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa.
Newberry won by five strokes over Tusculum (905, +41) and had the top individual in Daniel Stanley. Stanley captured SAC medalist honors for a second year in a row as he finished with a three-round score of 219, including an even-par 72 on the final day on the par-72, 6,903-yard course.
The team championship is the third in four years for Newberry, while Stanley is the third SAC medalist in school history.
Tusculum, which was in fifth place and 23 shots behind Newberry when play began Tuesday morning, posted a final-round best 291 and climbed to second as the Pioneers finished with 905.
Wingate's Clifford Blanquicet and Brad Cline of Catawba tied for second place with 221. Joining Stanley, Blanquicet and Cline on the all-tournament first team were Lincoln Memorial's Jamie Chapman and Tusculum's Nick York. Both players shot a 222 (+6) after 54 holes of play.
The all-tournament second team consisted of Tusculum's Derek Cantrell, Newberry's Chandler Gruenemeier and Ben Lown, Carson-Newman's Gavin Hay and Liam Ashby.
York was one of only two players on Tuesday to shoot in red numbers as he carded a one-under par 71. He had three birdies and two bogeys in his final 18 and earned a spot on the SAC All-Tournament Team for a second consecutive season.
York wasn't the low Pioneer of the day though as junior Derek Cantrell held that title, posting a two-under par 70 to finish with 223 and sole possession of sixth place. Cantrell had four birdies and two bogeys on his Tuesday scorecard, including three consecutive birdies on holes six, seven and eight to fire a three-under par 33 on his outward nine.
Defending tournament champion Lincoln Memorial finished third with 918, followed by Catawba College (927), Carson-Newman College (928), Wingate University (938), Lenoir-Rhyne University (951), Anderson University (961), Brevard College (976) and Mars Hill College (1012).
Newberry, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, automatically qualifies to the NCAA Regionals with its first-place finish today. This year, the regionals take place May 2-4 at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Fla.
