Four SAC Teams Earn NCAA Basketball Championship Selections
The NCAA Division II Basketball Committees announced their championship brackets on Sunday night, with two men’s teams and two women’s teams from the SAC earning selections.
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division II Basketball Committees announced their championship brackets on Sunday night, with two men's teams and two women's teams from the SAC earning selections.
In the women's bracket, SAC Tournament champion Anderson is the Southeast Region's No. 3 seed after earning the conference's automatic qualifying bid. The Trojans will face sixth-seeded Pfeiffer in the first round on Friday. The two teams met back in November with Pfeiffer winning in double overtime.
Anderson won the SAC regular season title by going 14-4 in conference games, and enters the NCAA Tournament at 23-8 overall. AU defeated Tusculum on Sunday in the SAC Championship title game after dispatching of Lincoln Memorial and Newberry to reach the final.
The Trojans have been led all season by SAC Player of the Year Alissa Diaz, who averages 16.9 points per game. The guard was also named the SAC Championship Most Valuable Player.
Lenoir-Rhyne, meanwhile, earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament after finishing the season 19-9 overall and 13-5 in the SAC. The Bears reached the semifinal round of the SAC Championship before being eliminated by Tusculum. They will face No. 5 seed S.C.-Aiken in the regional's first round on Friday.
L-R had the conference's most statistically-dominant defense this season, allowing just 55.9 points per game and 35.5-percent opponent field goal shooting. First-team All-SAC selection Jazmine Charles leads the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game.
Each game of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Southeast Regional will be played at top-seeded Clayton St.
In the men's NCAA Championship field, Lincoln Memorial is the region's No. 2 seed and will take on seventh-seeded UNC Pembroke on Saturday in the first round. LMU won the SAC regular-season title after going 15-3 in the conference, and enters the NCAA Tournament at 24-5 overall.
The Railsplitters, led by All-SAC First Team selection Jake Troyli and Vincent Bailey, were runners-up at this week's SAC Basketball Championship. They received an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.
Wingate is seeded fourth in the region and will face No. 5 seed Limestone in the championship's first round. WU earned the AQ after defeating Anderson and Lincoln Memorial this weekend to win the SAC Basketball Championship title.
The Bulldogs are currently 21-8 overall and went 14-4 in the conference. The team is led by a pair of second-team All-Conference selections, guard Paidrick Matilus and forward Odell Turner.
