Catawba, Wingate Earn Berths In NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - South Atlantic Conference men's basketball regular-season champion Catawba College, and Food Lion SAC Tournament champion Wingate University both earned spots into the 2007 Division II Men's Basketball national tournament.
Augusta State in Augusta, Ga., is the region's top seed and will host the regional tournament.
Wingate (22-8) heads back to the national tournament for the second year in a row as the SAC's automatic qualifier for winning the conference tournament. Wingate will face fourth seed Armstrong Atlantic State in the first round.
Catawba (20-10) and the SAC regular-season champion, earned a spot in the field as an at-large qualifier. Catawba will face third seed Clayton State in the first round.
Top seed Augusta State will open against eighth-seed Elizabeth City State, while second seed Virginia Union University will face seventh seed Lander.
The region tournament winners will advance to the Elite Eight, which will be held in Springfield, Mass., March 21, 22 and 24.
Game times for the region tournament will be announced Monday.
