The South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Scheduling Agreement with UNC Pembroke
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference Council of Presidents has agreed to a football scheduling commitment with UNC Pembroke. The agreement is for a term of four years and will begin in 2017.
The agreement will give the eight South Atlantic Conference football playing member institutions another in-region common opponent, while helping the Braves complete a NCAA Division II schedule.
"Member institutions of the South Atlantic Conference look forward to our scheduling agreement with UNC Pembroke," said Tusculum College President and Chair of the South Atlantic Conference Presidents Council Dr. Nancy B. Moody. "Many of the current schools have played UNCP in previous years and have always been impressed with the program."
The Braves will play all eight SAC schools. However, they will not count as a "Conference" opponent in the standings, nor will its student-athletes be eligible for South Atlantic Conference honors.
"The football-playing members of the South Atlantic Conference are very appreciative of the ability to play another strong, in-region opponent on an annual basis starting in 2017, stated South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz. "Chancellor Carter and Athletic Director Dick Christy are great leaders and the SAC looks forward to working with UNCP for the next several years."
UNC Pembroke is located within 375 miles of all eight member institutions in the South Atlantic Conference footprint and will likely reduce travel expenses for the Braves and the SAC schools.
"We are extremely pleased to enter into an affiliation agreement with the South Atlantic Conference for football," said UNCP chancellor Dr. Kyle R. Carter. "The SAC is comprised of schools that promote academic quality and a strong commitment to NCAA Division II athletics - both attributes that complement UNC Pembroke's own values. Since we reintroduced football in 2006, we have competed regularly against SAC schools as part of our regular season schedule. Those contests have always produced intense competition, strong sportsmanship and respect across each side of the line of scrimmage. I can't think of a better conference for our football program to be allied with."
