Newberry Football’s Drummond Named National Offensive Player of Week
CHICAGO - Newberry quarterback Mazi Drummond (Greer, S.C.) was named National Offensive Player of the Week by Don Hansen's National Football Weekly Gazette announced today.
Drummond, a 6-0, 180, junior from Greer, SC, set a Newberry school record with 479 yards of total offense as the Indians defeated Wingate 32-31. The former Greer High School standout accounted for four touchdowns in the game and provided the winning score on the ground with just seven seconds remaining. Drummond ran for 142 yards and two scores and threw for two more, completing 18-of-31 passes for 337 yards. The Indians also broke their single-season passing touchdowns record in the contest. Drummond set Newberry season highs for rushing attempts and yardage, rushing touchdowns and passing yardage in the contest.
Drummond now has 992 yards passing in just two starts for the Indians, who have 2,022 yards passing on the year. He has a team-high efficiency rating of 134.5 and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions for the season. His efficiency rating ranks him fourth-best in the South Atlantic Conference.
Drummond is also Newberry's leading rusher, with 336 yards rushing this season, with the team-high of three rushing touchdowns. His 1,356 yards of total offense puts him at sixth-best in the league, despite starting just two games at quarterback.
He also has nine receptions, three punt returns and a team-high 10 kickoff returns this season. He is ranked second in the SAC in kickoff return yardage. He is number 10 in both rushing yardage and passing yardage in the SAC. He is the only player in the South Atlantic Conference to be ranked in the top ten in rushing yardage, passing yardage and kickoff return yardage.
Earlier this week, Drummond was named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as well as D2Football.com Honorable Mention Offensive Player of the Week.
