Wingate’s Brewer Earns Daktronics D-II All-America Team Honors
Brookings, S.D.----Wingate University junior punter Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C.) has been named to the Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-America football second team, officials announced earlier today. In December, Brewer earned Daktronics All-South Region first team honors.
Brewer was named first team All-South Atlantic Conference as a punter and a place kicker. He made the Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-America football second team as a punter. Brewer earned Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette special teams "player of the week" six times this year and D2Football.com special teams "player of the week" one time.
A four-time SAC special teams "player of the week," Brewer hit a South Atlantic Conference record 89-yard punt versus Lenoir-Rhyne College on Oct. 11, 2003. Brewer led the South Atlantic Conference in punting average (42.3 yards per punt). Brewer is 11th in the NCAA Division II in punting average. In addition, he topped the SAC charts with 27 punts inside the 20.
The 2003 season was Brewer's first season of full-time punting duty. Brewer had not punted in college prior to this season. He had 85 punts for 3597 yards (42.3 yards per punt) with four touchbacks and 20 punts of 50 yards or better.
He also handled Wingate's place-kicking duties in 2003. As a placekicker this season, Brewer led the SAC in total field goals with 10. In addition, he was second in the league in kick scoring with 62 points.
Brewer made 10-of-13 field goals this season and 32-of-33 extra points. In 2003, Brewer had 28 touchbacks (out of 56 kick-offs). He spent the 2002 season as Wingate's primary kick-off man. He had three field goals in 2002.
Chris Brewer was characteristically humble about this most recent honor.
"I was stunned when I heard the news," Brewer said. "My first
love is placekicking. I never imagined having to punt. Earning
Daktronics All-America honors will give me more drive to improve my
punting. I know this will be one of my top goals in the
off-season."
Five South Atlantic Conference student-athletes were named to the
2003 Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-America football team. In
addition to Wingate University's Chris Brewer, two players each
from Carson-Newman College and Tusculum College made one of the two
squads.
For Carson-Newman, junior offensive guard Reggie Perkins made the first team, while senior offensive center Justin Anderson made the second team. For Tusculum, senior cornerback Ricardo Colclough made the first team, while senior wide receiver Kevin Wolcott made the second team. Colclough was a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, an award that honors the NCAA Division II national "player of the year."
The 2003 season marks the 11th year the Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-America football team has been selected by a vote of sports information directors from NCAA Division II football-playing members. The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at the every level of competition.
