Tusculum's Hinton Named 2020 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Baseball
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Tusculum's Trey Hinton was voted the 2020 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
Hinton, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., is a three-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Tusculum Dean's List, Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List selection. He was named to the 2019 Division II Athletic Directors Association Honor Roll, was a 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, and was the recipient of the Senior Key Award presented by the Tusculum University Sport Management Department.
"Trey is the epitome of everything that you want in a student-athlete," said Tusculum head baseball coach Brandon Steele. "Trey is a great teammate, he is competitive, and he takes a great deal of pride in his academics. I'm extremely proud of Trey's accomplishments and he is very deserving of this award."
An infielder, Hinton made 22 starts during the 2020 season, finishing second on the team in batting with a .338 average. He finished second on the team and fifth in the SAC in walks with 18 and was 10-for-11 in stolen bases, including a single-game Tusculum record of five stolen bases versus Gannon on Feb. 15. He also drove in 18 runs on the year and scored 13 runs.
In addition to his success on the field and in the classroom, Hinton is an active member of the Tusculum University community. He is a volunteer for the Tusculum Athletic Communications staff, volunteers at area schools reading to children, and providing activities as part of the Tusculum View Elementary School "Tiger Time". He also spent time volunteering at the Nettie Day of Service, assisted the Make-A-Wish Foundation as a volunteer, and volunteered at the Christian Academy of Knoxville Baseball Summer Camps. Hinton is also a member of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
