TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The No. 3 seed Catawba College Indians used a pair of two-run innings to take down the No. 1 seed North Greenville University Crusaders 4-3 on Friday (May 24) evening in game one of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional final.
The Indians gave up an early run in the first, but scored two in the third to take a 2-1 lead. After three scoreless innings, the Crusaders scored two in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. However, Catawba would bounce back and score two runs on three hits in the eighth to take the 4-3 lead. Peyton Williams then slammed the door shut on the Crusaders in the ninth to secure the win.
Riley Myers (8-0) earned the win on the mound for the Indians. He threw an inning and a third of relief, allowing no runs and no hits with a strikeout. Williams (12) earned his twelfth save of the season as he threw a scoreless and hitless ninth, with three strikeouts.
Joe Butts led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Jacob Nester also had two hits, including a double for the Indians.
Catawba and North Greenville will return to the field on Saturday (May 25) for the final games of the series. Game one is slated for a 4 p.m. start with game two, if necessary, scheduled for 8 p.m.
