Catawba’s Ahearn, Wingate’s Childs Named To ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Baseball Team
Catawba senior shortstop Chris Ahearn and Wingate University sophomore designated hitter Kevin Childs have been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III baseball team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) was named to the first team and is elgible for the national All-American ballot. Ahearn has a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Sports Management.
Ahearn, who is a Dean's List and Presidential Honor Roll student at Catawba, has also twice been named first team All-South Atlantic Conference. He is currently hitting .354 with five homers and 37 RBI.
Childs (Anderson, S.C. / T.L. Hanna High School) earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors for the first time in his career.

Childs is a triple threat for the Bulldogs, as he serves as a DH, pitcher and first baseman. This season, he hit .278 with four home runs and 27 RBI. Childs posted eight multiple hit games and seven multiple RBI games. He had a Bulldog season-high 16 putouts in a 5-2 victory over Newberry College on April 3.
Childs had one save in 11 pitching appearances this year. He posted a 2.55 ERA in 24 2/3 innings of work. Childs notched 17 strikeouts against only seven walks. In 2009, opponents hit .172 against him.
In the classroom, Childs possesses a 3.42 GPA. He is a sport management major at Wingate. Childs is one of only two South Atlantic Conference student-athletes to make the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III baseball teams (college division). Catawba College senior shortstop Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, N.C.) was voted to the first team.
Childs has been a member of the Phi Epsilon Kappa sport sciences fraternity for two years. In his hometown, he has served as a YMCA summer camp counselor. Childs has coached a twelve-and-under youth baseball team in Anderson for one-and-a-half years. Also, he has coached a 10-and-under youth basketball team for four Christmas vacations.
The District III College Division consists of all-non NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. In addition, the student-athlete must be a starter or a significant reserve on his team.
The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America selected Childs for this prestigious honor. Twenty-three student-athletes were named to either the first or second ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III baseball teams. The 14 first team honorees will advance to the national ballot.
