UVA Wise's Lawrence and Anderson's Brock Receive South Atlantic Conference BMI Postgraduate Scholarships
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced on Wednesday (May 26) that the University of Virginia's College at Wise's Madelyn Lawrence and Anderson University's Cal Brock will be the recipients of the Bob McCloskey Insurance (BMI) Postgraduate Scholarships.
"We are very excited to award postgraduate scholarships to these outstanding student-athletes and allow them to further their education," said SAC Commissioner Patrick Britz. "We are honored to be able to reward the hard work and dedication that these individuals have put in on the court and the golf course, as well as in the classroom."
"We are honored to be able to help support the student-athletes of the South Atlantic Conference," Peter Ginnegar, Senior Vice President of BMI stated. "We know that the cost of higher education can be difficult to manage, but we hope these scholarships will allow these deserving student-athletes the opportunity to complete their degrees."
Lawrence, a senior volleyball player from Harrisonburg, Va., played in all eight matches for the Cavaliers during the shortened spring 2021 season amassing 25 kills, six digs, and nine blocks as a middle blocker.
A biochemistry major, Lawrence completed her course work with a 3.942 GPA. She was awarded the CRC Freshman in Chemistry Award, was a TICE Total Achievement Award winner, was a 2020 Cavalier of the Year finalist, was the 2020 Highland Cavalier Club Rising Senior Female Athlete Scholarship Award winner, and she was a 2021 Honorary Student Commencement Speaker. She will attend Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Dentistry where she will complete the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.
"Maddy embodies the definition of a student-athlete and is one of the hardest working kids I've had the pleasure of coaching, both on and off the court," remarked UVA Wise head volleyball coach Kristen Salyer. "The time and commitment she put in to ensure she reached her dental school dreams while managing the demands of being a Division II volleyball player are unmatched."
Brock, a senior from Greenwood, S.C., was a four-year member of the Trojan men's golf team posting a career stroke average of 76. He was a member of the Anderson Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a member of the Anderson Science Association's Executive Leadership Committee, and an Anderson University Center for Cancer Research Cancer Fellow.
"I am so excited for Cal to receive the SAC postgraduate scholarship," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "It's great to see his hard work both in the classroom and on the course result in his receiving this honor. It is well deserved."
A biochemistry major, Brock holds a perfect 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation, he plans on attending Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine where he will pursue his medical doctorate.
The BMI postgraduate scholarships are awarded to SAC student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and have completed their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Both Lawrence and Brock will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship of $2,000 toward the graduate school of their choice.
