TOWSON, Md. – Three volleyball student-athletes from the SAC have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Team, a distinction which recognizes both academic and athletic achievement.
Wingate's Grace Krauser was one of six first-team selections, Tusculum's Ashley Sarmiento was a second-team pick and Anderson's Meghan Cautero was a third-team honoree.
Krauser, a sociology major, earns first-team accolades for the second-straight year. The senior carries a perfect 4.0 GPA while also minoring in Spanish. Last week, she was named the NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for the second time in her career.
Krauser finished fourth in the SAC with an average of 0.83 blocks per set and earned a selection to the All-Conference Second Team. She helped lead Wingate to a berth in the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship national quarterfinals.
Sarmiento's selection to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team was the junior's second straight. She is one of just two non-seniors to earn spots on the First or Second Team.
Sarmiento was selected as the 2012 SAC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was named to the All-SAC Second Team. She was a key contributor to Tusculum's run to the southeast regional final of the NCAA Volleyball Championship.
Sarmiento has a 3.91 GPA studying mathematics and math education.
Cautero, a third-team selection, is the only underclassman to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. The sophomore currently carries a perfect 4.0 studying pre-engineering.
Cautero ranked second in the SAC in 2012 with an average of 9.19 assists per set. She started every match this season for the Trojans, who earned a spot in the Food Lion SAC Volleyball Championship.
