Carson-Newman’s Mozgai Sets NCAA Record For Consecutive Points Served
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman sophomore Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) broke the NCAA Division II record for consecutive points served during a three-game sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan last weekend in the Carson-Newman Labor Day Tournament.
The previous record was broken in 2003 with 16 consecutive serves. Mozgai powered up 17 serves in a row to break the records.
"I had no idea that I was so close or that there was such a
record," said Mozgai, "It was cool because even though people see
my name as the record holder, the whole team was the ones who made
sure we kept the ball."
Mozgai broke the record on August 30, 2008 during the third set against West Virginia Wesleyan, when the Lady Eagles swept the Bobcats, 25-12, 25-12, 25-6.
"I think what is most exciting about Carly's 17 consecutive serves is that the majority of them were jump serves," added Head Coach Shannon Mincey, "I can remember at one point Carly looked at me, smiled and said 'This is fun!'"
When asked about her mindset during serving Mozgai said, "I just wanted to stay aggressive and mix it up so they didn't know what was coming next. It is important when serving not to focus strictly on power but on what is the smartest serve for the team."
Mozgai and the Lady Eagles will travel to Gaffney, S.C. on Friday, September 5 for the Limestone College Tournament. Carson-Newman will play at 3 and 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
