Wingate, Newberry, Carson-Newman, Catawba Advance In Food Lion SAC Volleyball Tournament
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-The Wingate University Bulldogs beat the Mars Hill College Lions 3-0 (30-12, 30-25, 30-17) Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament in Holt Fieldhouse. With the win, Wingate improves to 31-1 overall. The Bulldogs win their 22nd consecutive match. The Lions complete the 2007 campaign 13-19 overall.
Wingate freshman middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) led the Bulldog attack with 12 kills while hitting .385. The SAC Freshman of the Year, Gale also led the team with eight assisted blocks and a solo block. Junior outside hitter Kathryn Reddick (Franklinton, N.C.) had nine kills and added seven block assists. A second team all-conference performer, Reddick hit .412 for the match.
Bulldog senior setter Melissa DeLuca (Bahama, N.C.), a first team All-SAC selection, handed out 37 assists while adding 10 digs. Senior outside hitter Rachelle Rostas (Charlotte, N.C.) added eight kills. Junior libero Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.) also had 10 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Danielle Silvers (Waynesville, N.C.) led the Mars Hill attack with 10 kills. Freshman Chelsea Coleman (Woodstock, Ga.) added five. Lion freshman setter Sarah Paquette (Swannanoa, N.C.) had 18 assists for the Lions. Senior libero Tiffany Oreka (Chesapeake, Va.) had a game-high 13 digs.
Wingate jumped out early in the first game, taking a 17-5 lead. At one point, the Bulldogs scored six consecutive points on kills, with three from Gale and the other three from freshman Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.). The lead would never get back to single digits, with Megan McVicker (Mercer, Pa.) getting two late kills to seal the 30-12 win. Wingate hit .419 in the first game, while Mars Hill hit negative .107. The Bulldogs had 16 kills, while the Lions had three.
The second game stayed was tight from start to finish. Kills from Rostas and Gale, along with a Mars Hill error, gave the Bulldogs a 14-10 lead. The Lions cut the lead down to two, thanks to a kill from Silvers. The Bulldogs got the lead back to four at 22-18 on a kill from Rostas. Mars Hill answered with three straight points, two on kills from Silvers, to cut the lead to one.
A Rostas kill, followed by a Gale kill, stretched the lead back to three. Kills by Bloemer and Billo would help the Bulldogs stretch the lead out at the end for the 30-25 win. Wingate hit .227 in the second game, while Mars Hill hit .156.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a huge lead in the third game, scoring the first 10 points. Cancelliere had a pair of service aces, while Myklebust had three kills. Mars Hill came back to get it as close as five at 20-15. A kill from Gale, followed by back-to-back attack errors on Mars Hill, pushed Wingate's lead back to eight. A kill from Reddick would finish off the game, with the Bulldogs winning 30-17. Wingate hit .250 in the final game, while the Lions hit negative .094.
For the match, the Bulldogs hit .290 (45 kills, 14 errors, 107 attacks). Mars Hill hit .010 on the match (24 kills, 23 errors, 105 attacks). Wingate racked up 11.5 blocks while adding six aces. Mars Hill had five blocks on the match.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, when they play in the semifinal round at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs will take on the winner of the Newberry College-Lenoir-Rhyne College match. The semi-final winner will advance to the championship match at 6 p.m. Saturday.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-The fourth-seeded Newberry College Indians defeated fifth seed Lenoir-Rhyne , 3-1 (30-28, 31-29, 20-30, 30-24) to advance to the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament semifinals.
Newberry hit an impressive .351 for the match led by Pricila Sales' 19 kills. Lorena Maia added 15 kills while Fernanda Frey contributed 12 kills. Sales anchored the Indian defense with 10 digs while Brianna Blakely collected 52 assists.
For L-R, Jordan Ledford led the Bear offense with 15 kills, Abby Smith added 14 kills, and Caroline Albertelli had 12 kills. Lauren McLelland contributed 48 assists while Catherine Fulton led the Bears with 14 digs.
Newberry advances to play top seed Wingate, a 3-0 winner over eighth seed Mars Hill.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- Kelsey Fleck notched 16 kills as seventh-seeded Carson-Newman shocked #2 Tusculum, 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-27) in the first round of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Carson-Newman (22-10) came out fired up in a loud Holt Fieldhouse. Tusculum defeated the Eagles in their two regular season meetings, but the Eagles hit an astounding .324 in the first game and held TC to a .122 hitting percentage for the match.
Kelli Sorensen added six kills while Allyson Corhn and Stephanie Cutter provided 22 and 14 assists, respectively. Salem Stepp led C-N with 14 digs while Sorensen contributed 12 for the Lady Eagle defense. Cutter had three service aces while Nikki James led the C-N block party with three putbacks.
For the Pioneers (24-10), Vivian Lacy led all players with 17 kills while Gina Coffaro and Kelsey Hayden had eight kills each. Mariana Rezende's 37 assists led TC while Lacy led the Pioneers with 10 digs on the night.
The Eagles advance to the SAC Tournament semifinals where they'll take on third seed Catawba, a 3-0 winner over Lincoln Memorial in the second afternoon quarterfinal match.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-Melissa Powers collected 25 kills as third seed Catawba swept sixth seed Lincoln Memorial in the first round of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament at Holt Fieldhouse on the campus of Carson-Newman College.
The Indians (25-8) hit .273 in the opening game and held off strong rallies by LMU. Melissa Griffith added 13 kills for the Tribe while Andi Henderson conducted the Catawba offense with 28 assists. Nikki Bozick collected 22 digs while Griffith added 19 and Mai Zoua Lo and Andi Henderson contributed 11 digs each. Powers also had three blocks on the night.
For the Railsplitters (20-15), Amanda Horenkamp led the team with 13 kills while Lauren Kiwacka added 23 assists. Caitlin Hankins contributed 11 digs while Amanda Baker and Kiwacka provided 10 apiece.
The Indians will face seventh seed Carson-Newman in the semifinal match set for 11:00 Saturday morning at Holt Fieldhouse.
