Catawba’s Melissa Powers Named Volleyball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Catawba College junior Melissa Powers has been named the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 9.
Powers helped the Catawba Indians to four wins last week at the Chatham Orthopedics Classic. It marks the second time in three weeks that Powers has taken home the weekly league honor.
A former standout at North Moore High School (Bennett, N.C.),
Powers posted 20 or more kills in three of the wins with a high of
23 in a three-game victory over host Armstrong Atlantic.
Against Francis Marion, she had 20 kills and eight blocks then
finished the tournament with 21 kills in a sweep of Puerto Rico-Rio
Piedras.
For the week, Powers totaled 76 kills and had a .332 hitting percentage. She added 18 blocks, nine digs and an ace. The middle blocker is averaging 5.4 kills and 1.2 blocks per game this season in helping Catawba to an 11-1 record.
The SAC Volleyball Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
