Catawba’s Melissa Powers Named Volleyball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Catawba College junior Melissa Powers, of Bennett, N.C., has been named the initial South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the 2007 season.
Powers helped the Catawba Indians to four wins in the season-opening Moretz Sports Invitational, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne. It marks the second time the Powers has earned the honor as she was selected once last season.
Powers, a former standout at North Moore High School, recorded
73 kills over four matches as Catawba swept to 3-0 wins against
Texas A&M-Kingsville, Belmont Abbey, Queens and St. Andrews.
The 5-10, middle blocker posted double-figure kills in all four
matches and hit at 47.2 percent. She had a high of 21 against St.
Andrews with just one error in 35 swings. For the tournament,
Powers also added 11 blocks, 11 digs and five aces.
The SAC Volleyball Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
