2005 South Atlantic Conference Volleyball All-Conference Teams, Award Winners Announced
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Presbyterian College, which won the South Atlantic Conference regular season championship with a 14-0 record, swept the top post-season awards, the league announced today.
Senior middle blocker Jasmin Brown was named the SAC Volleyball Player of the Year, after leading the league in kills per game (4.12) and hitting percentage (.441). Presbyterian freshman setter Rachel Lewis, who led the conference in assists per game (13.3) was named SAC Volleyball Freshman of the Year. Ed Allen was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three years.
Presbyterian outside hitter Erin Friday, who was the SAC Player of the Year last season, joins Brown on the All-Conference First Team. Lewis and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Mason were named to the Second Team.
Wingate University, which finished second in the league standings, placed three on the All-Conference Team. Rebecca Brezovec, a junior outside hitter who finished second in the league in kills, hitting percentage and blocks and junior middle blocker Molly Kerns, who led the conference in blocks, were named to the First Team. Sophomore setter Melissa Deluca was named to the Second Team.
Brezovec also received the SAC Scholar Athlete Award for volleyball. She has a 4.0 GPA as a Sociology major and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Chi and Alpha Kappa Delta honor societies. She is active on the Wingate campus, serving as a student assistant and tutor for Sociology, a peer mentor to freshman students and a Wingate Presidential Ambassador. She part of the Leadership Fellows program, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Wingate Quality Enhancement Committee.
Carson-Newman had three players make All-Conference First Team in Kari Gibson, Kelli Sorensen and Blaire Young at the Libero position.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Angela Danley was a First Team selection, while Kathryn Phillips and Catherine Fulton at Libero were Second Team picks.
Catawba's Andi Henderson and Melissa Griffith were both named to the Second Team. Griffith was also named to the All-Freshman Team.
Newberry's Cara Coleman rounds out the All-Conference Second Team.
Joining Presbyterian's Lewis on the All-Freshman Team are Justine Lanchester of Presbyterian, Kathryn Reddick of Wingate, Kelsey Fleck of Carson-Neweman, Abby Smith of Lenoir-Rhyne and Griffith of Catawba.
The All-Conference Team is selected by the league's eight head coaches.
The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament begins Saturday morning at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. The All-Conference team and other award winners will be recognized after the 9:30 a.m. matches.
