Wingate’s Brezovec, Alley Named to Academic All-District Team
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University juniors Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, N.C.) and Lauren Alley (Bristol, Tenn.) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III volleyball first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Brezovec is a two-time district honoree, as she was named to the second team in 2004.
Named to the second team from the South Atlantic Conference were Presbyterian's Erin Friday and Catawba's Summer Zuck.
Also, Carson-Newman's Meg Davis was named to the District IV second team.
The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America select the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District volleyball teams.
The District III College Division consists of all-non NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia. District IV is comprised of colleges and universities from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or a significant reserve on his or her team.
Earlier this week, Brezovec was honored as the South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete for volleyball. The SAC Scholar Athlete award is bestowed upon only one student-athlete in each of the league's 14 sports.
In 88 games in 2005, Brezovec has 359 kills (4.08/game), 115 blocks (1.31/game) and a .346 hitting percentage. A junior middle blocker, Brezovec is second in the SAC in hitting percentage. In the classroom, she has compiled a perfect 4.00 GPA in her Sociology major.
A member of the Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Chi and Alpha Kappa Delta honor societies, Brezovec is active on the Wingate campus, serving as a student assistant and tutor for Sociology, a peer mentor to freshman students and a Wingate Presidential Ambassador. She is part of the Leadership Fellows program, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Wingate Quality Enhancement Committee.
A junior outside hitter, Alley possesses a 3.95 GPA in Physical Education. On the court, Alley is a two-year starter for the Bulldogs. In 2005, she has a .287 hitting percentage. She is second on the team to Brezovec in hitting. In SAC play, Alley is hitting .306.
Alley had a season-high 21 kills in a huge four-game win at Catawba last week. She is also a good ball-handler, as is evidenced by her 104 digs and 39 assists. Alley earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors for the first time in her career.
In 2003, Brezovec and Alley helped the Wingate University volleyball team make the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history. This year, the Bulldogs have compiled a 23-4 overall record and an 11-3 slate in the SAC. Wingate is the number two seed in this weekend's Food Lion SAC volleyball tournament.
Friday, a native of Summerville, S.C., has a 3.34 GPA while majoring in Biology for the Lady Blue Hose. She has been named to the school's Dean's List for three semesters while also being selected to the Beta Beta Beta and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies, and to the South Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll for three straight years.
She is very active on campus and in the community, having served on the Presbyterian College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four straight years including President of the committee this year. In addition, she has volunteered with Special Olympics, PC Student Volunteer Services, Habitat for Humanity, and the Clinton Food Bank as well as coordinated fundraising for Make-A-Wish Promotion and fundraising for Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief on campus.
In the court, Friday earned first team All-SAC honors for the third straight year this season after averaging 3.60 kills, 3.26 digs while posting a .305 hitting percentage. She has helped lead the team to a 29-4 overall record, including a perfect 14-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play this season. The Lady Blue Hose are currently ranked No. 6 in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll.
During her career, Friday has helped the Lady Blue Hose to compile a 113-31 record, a 48-8 mark in SAC league play, a share of three straight SAC regular season titles, the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament title, and a trip to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. The Lady Blue Hose will be the No. 1 seed in this weekend's 2005 Food Lion/SAC Tournament held in Hickory, N.C. with PC being the defending champs.
Zuck (Kingston, TN) leads Catawba in aces this season with 53 and is fourth in digs with 280. She has also added 42 kills and 17 blocks. Zuck has a 3.97 GPA and is an elementary education major.
Davis (Birmingham, Ala.), a 5-9 junior, has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Food Nutrition. She is a member of the Carson-Newman Dean's List, SAC Commissioners Honor Roll and is enrolled in Carson-Newman's Honors Program. Davis earned C-N Family and Consumer Sciences Division Masterson-Collins Scholarship, Child Nutrition Foundation Schwan's Food Service Scholarship, C-N Presidential Honors Scholarship, American Dietetic Association Foundation Geraldine M. Piper Scholarship and the C-N Kellye J. Tollett Scholarship. She is a member of Kappa Omicron Nu, serving as secretary, Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Chi.
In the community, Davis is a member of Student Dietetic Association, serving as Vice-president, and is a member of the American Dietetic Association, Tennessee Dietetic Association, Knoxville District Dietetic Association and the C-N Student Ambassador Association. She has worked as a Special Olympics Athletics Competition Volunteer and volunteered for Appalachian Outreach, Second Harvest Kids Café and has worked numerous summer volleyball camps throughout the Southeast.
Davis has 212 kills and 62 blocks for the Lady Eagles this season. She will lead her team into the South Atlantic Conference Tournament this weekend in Hickory, N.C.
